About

BOTS is a non-for-profit, community led organization representing and supporting the Black and African Community across the Waterloo Bring on the Sunshine is a grassroots community organisation based in Waterloo Region. Created from a desire to celebrate Africa, culture, community and family we run 4 annual programs. Our theme in 2021 is Black History is African History is World History. The first is a one day, free festival in February, during Black History Month. A team of developing leaders of (youth between the ages of 18 – 28yrs) learn to run the festival with community mentorship as part of the Youth Leadership Program. Africa Camp, launched as an opportunity for young people of the African diaspora to learn about their roots is a one week summer camp. It has also grown into a youth leadership development program including Black and marginalized youth from many backgrounds. We also provide educational programming within local schools across the region and pop up events in the townships.

Communications Assistant

Who we are looking for

  • The eligible candidate must be between the age of 15 and 30 years old.
  • Must be legally permitted to work in Canada as a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person on
    whom refugee protection has been conferred under the immigration Refugee Protection Act.
  • The eligible candidate will work for 8 weeks, 35 hours per week.
  • The wage is $17.00 per hour.

 

The candidate will report into the Communications Director, head of the Fundraising and Funding Committee.
The Communications Coordinator will build and promote. BOTS’s work externally within the larger Community
and mainstream community, non-profit world.

Duties include but not limited to

  • You may need to be the customer support person online, marketing person and occasionally, a graphic designer.
  • Social media – create a list of annual events to recognize, design and schedule posts for the year ahead
  • Build our SM followers across all platforms
    Find SM influencers that align with our goals and brand
  • Build a dashboard for tracking SM over time, help us set annual goals for SM engagement
  • Help develop Strategy and analytics for promoting the brand
  • Update website as needed
    sort and tag BOTS photo archive using google photos focused on program labels, people, activities etc
  • Working with team Plan and prepare a social media campaign to help build awareness and fundraise for BOTS
    programs for xmas season
  • Act as A community manager posting as a brand ambassador under their own account, not the brand’s, and work on
    developing the community by participating in discussions, finding new customers and listening to the current ones.
  • E-commerce and digital marketing – promote BOTS Shop across social media and increase sales by linking sites,
    promoting across platforms, etc
  • Finding new users and answering their questions
    Replying and engaging current community members
  • Strategy for developing the community
  • Video editing
  • Sorting historical files and archives, going through hard drives, cds etc and filing appropriately
  • Responsible for content development, posts and upkeep of BOTS social media accounts on Twitter, Instagram,
    Facebook, Telegram and creating accounts on other appropriate platforms for the promotion of BOTS work
  • Helps team develop ideas for new web and graphic content
  • Develops an inventory of content and customized BOTS graphics for significant/symbolic days of the year i.e.Africa
    Day, International Women’s Day, and any other days in the year that have significance to the organization
  • This requires creating an inventory/calendar of significant days relevant to BOTS
  • Create an outreach strategy to connect with external stakeholders, Business, public officials and potential new donors
  • Create a database of contacts of organizations and community leaders who do like-minded work or are interested
    in BOTS programs and focus
  • Look at existing BOTS programs and work with website coordinator to create a plan that would elevate the work on
    social media platforms
  • Create promotional plans and strategy to appeal to new audiences
  • Work on a plan to engage new members
  • Assist with fundraising efforts and developing a fundraising campaign for BOTS
  • Research for funding opportunities
  • Flexible schedule, being open to weekend and evenings

Duties include but not limited to

  • Being creative, innovative and ability to develop proactive ideas on stakeholder engagement and outreach
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment and with staff, board of directors and volunteers
  • Excellent customer service skills, including both verbal and written interpersonal communication skills
  • Exceptionally self-motivated, self-directed and carries a can-do, positive attitude
  • Deadline oriented with strong attention to detail
  • Fluency in English is required
  • Able to work remotely

Camp Coordinator Summer Student

Who we are looking for

Duties Include:

  • Ensure all registration and administration is complete where applicable for community events.
  • Participate in weekly camp leadership, focusing on volunteer leadership. Engage in up-front leadership of Africa camp.
  • Provide practical coordination and administrative assistance in the running of children/youth activities;
  • Provide administrative assistance in the recruitment, training and development of youth volunteers).
  • Consider ways and engage ways that BOTS could significantly upgrade its communications. Including a review of the website and proposed changes. Collect participant stories and pictures throughout the summer and update website and social media regularly to “tell the story” .
  • Work with the team to create, give direction and provide oversight to summer camps. Assist in the daily facilitation of camp as needed.
  • General clerical work, organizing, filing. Assisting staff and volunteers in administrative tasks.
  • Keep track of “time sheets” – hours worked – submit every 2 weeks.
